He is accountable to his committee and the general delegation who gives account to the Alliance française de Paris about the actions undertaken by him. He thereby acts as the link between the local Alliance, the General Delegation and the Alliance française de Paris. Furthermore, he is the natural contact person of the Cultural Division of the Embassy of France. Most of the directors are appointed by the MEA (it is such in 12 Alliances out of the 15) Within the committee, his role is above all to implement the policy defined by the latter within the frame-work of the agreement with the Ministry of External Affairs. He also acts as the honorary secretary and is automatically a member of the Board, in an advisory capacity and without voting rights. He participates in all the discussions. Moreover, he helps in the preparation of the General Assembly (dispatch of summons to attend the meeting, drawing up of the agenda) and presents the annual report during the same which then has to be approved by the General Assembly. He helps in the preparation of the election of the committee, which usually takes place during the General Assembly meeting. Lastly, he extends his assistance to the Treasurer in the preparation of the financial statement of the year gone by and the drawing up of the budgetary plans for the ensuing year. However, his main function remains administration of the institution on a daily basis which involves various activities that he has to carry out in order to see to the proper working of his team and to make it dynamic. At the administrative level, he is the head of the staff and he is accountable for the financial management of the AF in collaboration with the treasurer and the accountant under the supervision of the Committee. At the pedagogical level, it is he who organizes the classes and chooses the methods to be used in his alliance. He also recruits teachers and other staff in accordance with the Governing Body ( it is the Governing Body which has the responsibility of signing the contracts of the locally recruited employees whose contracts are subjected to the local laws governing private work) and takes charge of their on-going training. The biggest alliances get a French pedagogical director who then takes charge of this aspect of his work. In all the cases, the director is assisted in this work by the teaching body. At the cultural level, he organizes cultural activities in conjunction with the committee: he proposes to them a program of cultural activities to be presented within the premises of the Alliance Française or outside and takes up the entire responsibility for the programs retained and their follow-up: generation of funds, promotion, and premises for the presentation of these activities, receiving the artists and all the legal formalities linked to their visit. He is assisted in this task by the administrative staff in charge of cultural activities.
