Founded in 1940, Alliance Française de Calcutta aims at promoting and encouraging cultural exchanges between India and France, particularly by diffusing the French language. Since the opening of its language school in 1948, the teaching methods have progressed with the evolution of this discipline. Today, Alliance Française de Calcutta has more than 1000 students per year and this number grows steadily.

To develop Indo-French cultural exchanges, Alliance Française de Calcutta organises throughout the year various cultural events in collaboration with the Embassy of France in India and local
partners : theatre shows, art exhibitions, classical and modern music concerts, song contests, literary evenings, film festivals. Alliance Française de Calcutta also makes every effort to build up cultural relationship between French and Indian artists and intellectuals.
