Events for March 2008

Francophonie :The term was coined by French essayist Onésime Reclus in 1880 to describe the geographic areas and colonies in which French was spoken.
La Francophonie
is also an international organisation of French-speaking countries and governments.
But today, what Francophonie means to all is a community of French-speaking people, sharing an interest for French Language and Culture.
Half a billion Francophones around the world will celebrate the International Month of Francophonie again this March. This event was first launched in 1998 as a way for the 49 countries, members of "La Francophonie" to celebrate their common bond, the French language, as well as their diversity.

TALKS AND CONFERENCES

Gaëlle Hippolyte and Rayas Richa
Drawing practices, writing journeys

Mar 5, 6:30 pm

@ AFB Gallery

Conference in French

All welcome till hall is full

AFB together with the Point Ephémère Paris are pleased to present the artistic journey of Gaëlle Hippolyte and Rayas Richa in North India.
Starting in February 2008, the trip will follow the steps of Kipling's and Satyajit Ray's fiction characters Kim and Apu. The artists will explore the humanist journeys of these heroes across North India from Kolkata to Dehli via Shimla. The trip will be done on a rickshaw or Ambassador driven by the artists themselves - which is a way of introducing distance and burlesque elements in the quest.
The residence will lead to the publishing of a graphic collaborative novel and to exhibitions.

March 4
Indigènes / Days of Glory

Directed by Rachid Bouchareb, 2006

A large number of indigènes (Algerians, Tunisians and Moroccan) were enrolled in the French First Army of the Free French Forces, formed to liberate France after the Nazi invasion in World War II.
Four Indigènes in a mobile corps with a reputation for endurance and courage in close combat are sent to the front line, each with a different personal purpose as they fight their way through the Italian Campaign and on to Operation Dragoon to liberate France.

March 11
Indochine

Directed by Régis Warnier, 1992

The movie begins as Camille, a young girl from an Annamese aristocratic family, is adopted by Eliane Devries after her parents die. Perhaps as a consequence of the adoption, Madame Devries owns and runs a large rubber plantation that employs indentured laborers, and where she raises Camille as her daughter. Madame Devries meets and has an affair with a French Navy officer Jean-Baptiste. In an accident, a French police officer almost kills Camille who is rescued by Jean-Baptiste and they fall in love witheach other. Madame Devries has Jean-Baptiste sent away to protect Camille from being hurt.

March 18
Mon Colonel

Directed by Laurent Herbier, 2006

A "Reformed Colonel" is found dead in Paris, a couple of decades after Algeria's struggle for independence was won from France. Lieutenant Galois is assigned the investigation of this murder. She receives the diary of Lieutenent Guy Rossi who served under The Colonel in Algeria in 1956, and has been reported as missing in action since 1957. The revelations found in Rossi's diary go far beyond The “Reformed” Colonel's actions in Algeria, and give an insight on how dirty Algeria's War for Independence really was.
